How do you get a koi to grow and finish to the maximum extent possible?
First, you buy the best koi from the best bloodlines available, such as the above Kohaku, nicknamed
"The Submarine", bred by Toshio Sakai.
Toshio Sakai, owner of Isawa Nishikigoi Center and several times All Japan Show Grand Champion Breeder
recommends feeding silkworm pupae when the water temperature is over 70 degrees F to produce the maximum growth,
bulk, and sheen.
Our silkworm are over 60% protein and contain lipids and amino acids that facilitate growth
and healthy skin development. This is especially important in some blood lines where Fukurin skin is
predominant, most noteably Matsunosuke koi of the Sakai brothers of Isawa and Yamamatsu, and the other breeders using their bloodlines.
We have fed our koi silkworm from our silkworm producer over the last growing season. The growth rates are comparable
with Japanese mud pond growth rates for Tategoi. Near the end of winter, fat supplies are sufficient
so as to not leave koi in the "catch-up mode" from the previous winter when the spring arrives.
By April, 2004, we will be selling silkworm in 5 kg packages. Because of shipping, the price is not yet
determined, but we do expect it to be well below the current US retail pricing for silkworm. Bulk quantities
and dealer inquiries are welcome.
