In general, a good Koi must meet the following five criteria:

1. Body line is straight, body is impressive, or if small, has "the right stuff" to grow to an impressive size and shape.
2. Has deep Sashi. The tips of the red scales go under white scales and show pink at the front of the Hiban, or red patches, toward the front of the koi .
3. Red patterns may shrink with growth. The back edge of the red patches, the kiwa, towards the koi's tail should be uniform and stable.
4. Has thick and lusterous red patches, Hiban, without weak and patchy irregularity.
5. Never buy a koi that you don't like the looks of or doesn't have the potential to "finish" into a koi you will enjoy.
